Betana Wetland
~25 km · 35–45 min driveA peaceful community-managed wetland in Morang, known for boating, forest walks, and birdwatching. Betana is a quick nature escape from Biratnagar and works well as a half-day stop before longer eastern Nepal routes.
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
50 km · 1 hr driveNepal's premier wetland sanctuary and a Ramsar site. Home to the last remaining wild water buffalo population, over 500 bird species, and the majestic Gangetic dolphin. Best visited October–March for migratory bird watching, river rafting, and jungle walks.
Dharan
40 km · 45 min driveA vibrant hill-base city nestled at the foot of the Mahabharat range. Known for BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, the Pindeshwor Temple, and a lively food scene. The gateway to the eastern hills.
Dhankuta
85 km · 2.5 hr driveA charming hilltop bazaar town at 1,200m elevation, famous for its traditional Dhankuta topi (cap) and panoramic mountain views. The weekly haat bazaar draws traders from across the eastern hills.
Hile Bazaar
95 km · 3 hr driveA ridge-top market town at 1,900m offering sweeping views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu on clear days. The final major settlement before the trail to Makalu Base Camp begins. Famous for its butter tea and yak cheese.
Terhathum
110 km · 3.5 hr driveA quiet hill district headquarters sitting at 1,600m, surrounded by terraced farmland and rhododendron forests. Known for cardamom cultivation and the unique Limbu cultural heritage of the Kirat people.
Ilam
220 km · 5 hr driveNepal's tea capital. Rolling hills carpeted in emerald tea gardens, misty mornings, and cool mountain air. Visit the Kanyam tea estate, Mai Pokhari (a sacred crater lake), and Sandakpur for sunrise views over five of the world's highest peaks.
Namche Bazaar & Everest Region
~270 km (flight + trek) · Flight to Lukla + 2-day trekThe legendary Sherpa capital at 3,440m — gateway to Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, and Sagarmatha National Park. From Biratnagar, travelers usually connect via Kathmandu to reach Lukla before trekking onward. Namche buzzes with trekking culture, bakeries, and stunning views of Ama Dablam and Everest.
Kimathanka & the China Border
~362 km via Koshi Highway · 2–3 days (road under development)The northern terminus of the Koshi Highway — one of Nepal's three strategic India-to-China land corridors. The road runs from Jogbani on the Indian border through Biratnagar, Khandbari, and up to Kimathanka, where it meets the Chinese border at Chentang (Zhentang) in Tibet. In January 2025, the Nepal Army completed the breakthrough of the last rocky section, connecting the full 362 km route for the first time. A future trade and transit gateway of enormous geopolitical significance.

Darjeeling, India
280 km · 6 hr drive via KakarvittaThe legendary "Queen of the Hills" is surprisingly close to Biratnagar. Cross into India at Kakarvitta/Panitanki and wind up through tea country to Darjeeling at 2,042m. Famous for its toy train (UNESCO), Tiger Hill sunrise, and world-renowned Darjeeling tea.
Sikkim, India
320 km · 7 hr drive via KakarvittaThe enchanted Himalayan kingdom — India's cleanest state and a biodiversity hotspot. From Biratnagar, cross the border and drive through Siliguri to reach Gangtok, Pelling, and the stunning Gurudongmar Lake at 5,430m. Requires Indian visa and Sikkim permit for foreign nationals.
Thimphu, Bhutan
~475 km · 13–15 hr driveThe world's only carbon-negative country is reachable overland from Biratnagar. The route follows the East-West Highway to Kakarvitta, crosses into India at Panitanki, passes through Siliguri, then enters Bhutan at Phuentsholing/Jaigaon — the most popular overland entry into Bhutan. From there, a dramatic 170 km mountain road climbs from the plains to Thimphu at 2,320m. SAARC nationals need only an entry permit at the border; others require a visa arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.
Bangladesh
~220 km to border · 4–5 hr drive to Burimari borderSouth Asia's most underrated destination is closer than you think. From Biratnagar, drive to Siliguri via Jogbani, then head to the Changrabandha (India) / Burimari (Bangladesh) border crossing in just 4–5 hours. The route passes through the famous Siliguri Corridor — the narrow "Chicken's Neck" wedged between Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. From the border, Rangpur and Dhaka are within reach, opening the door to Cox's Bazar (world's longest beach), the Sundarbans (UNESCO mangrove forest), and Sylhet's tea gardens.

Hindu Temples & Shrines
Chataradham (Barahakshetra)
One of Nepal's Char Dham — a complex of 9 temples at the confluence of the Koshi rivers, mentioned in the Mahabharata. Maha Kumbha Mela held here every 12 years.

One of Nepal's most important Shakti Peeth temples at 12,448 ft. Sacred to both Hindus and the Limbu people. Devotees believe a pilgrimage here ensures fulfilment of wishes.

A Shakti Peeth marking where Goddess Satidevi's teeth fell. Nestled in the Bijayapur hills, it is one of eastern Nepal's most visited temples during Dashain.

Believed to fulfil wishes and bring good luck. Historically marks the tomb of Buddhi Karna Raya Khebang, the last Limbu king. Known for its unique tipless bamboo plants.

One of the oldest Shiva temples in the region, located 1.5 km from Dantakali. Part of Dharan's significant religious hub along the Bijayapur hills.
Ramdhuni Temple
Features an eternal flame believed to have been lit by Lord Ram during his exile. Devotees gather especially during Ram Navami.

A pagoda-style temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, originally built in the 1900s. Believers consider it a place where prayers help overcome death itself.
Pathibhara Temple (Bhedetar)
A branch of the main Pathibhara in Taplejung, sacred to both Hindu and Kirat worshippers. A half-hour hike from Bhedetar bazaar.
Myanglung Devi Temple
A significant temple at 1,500m elevation in the Terhathum district headquarters, drawing pilgrims from across the eastern hills.
Manakamana Temple
Located near the Arun River, this temple draws thousands annually — especially in November for major fairs. Said to have been brought from the famous Manakamana in Gorkha.

Satakshidham
Known as the "Second Janakpurdham of Nepal." A famous religious and tourist area at 280–300m elevation.
Buddhist & Syncretic Sites
Halesi Mahadev
A cave shrine sacred to Hindus (as Mahadeva/Shiva) and Buddhists (linked to Padmasambhava). Called "the Pashupatinath of the east." Major festivals during Shivaratri and Bala Chaturdashi.

A Ramsar wetland at 2,100m with a Bhagwati temple on its shores. Sacred to Hindus and visited by Buddhists at the nearby Shri Antu Danda Monastery. Stunning natural setting among rhododendron forests.
Shiva Dhara
A high-altitude pilgrimage site on the route to Makalu Base Camp. Snow-covered 8–9 months a year. Annual fair during the August full moon draws devotees from across eastern Nepal.
Gupteshwor Mahadev
A cave shrine in Sankhuwasabha district, revered by both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
Siddhakali Temple
Mentioned in the Swasthani Bratakatha as the site where Sati Devi's eye departed. An important pilgrimage destination in the eastern hills.
