Overview

The Koshi Podway Project is a proposed modern transportation corridor connecting Biratnagar with the hill city of Dharan, approximately 40 kilometers to the north. The project aims to address existing challenges including weak urban infrastructure, an inefficient transport system, and growing traffic congestion between the two cities.

Objectives

  • Create an efficient public transit link between Biratnagar and Dharan
  • Reduce traffic congestion on the existing highway
  • Support economic integration between Terai and hill communities
  • Modernize the region's transportation infrastructure

Strategic Significance

The Biratnagar-Dharan corridor is one of the busiest transport routes in eastern Nepal. As both cities grow — Biratnagar as the provincial capital and Dharan as a major educational and commercial hub — an efficient transit connection between them becomes increasingly critical for regional development.
