Overview

Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar, one of the major government hospitals in eastern Nepal, is undergoing a significant expansion. The Federal Urban Development and Building Construction Office, Morang, is constructing two new buildings under the Ministry of Urban Development with a combined capacity of 759 beds.

Construction Details

  • 11-storey building: Estimated cost Rs 245 million — 35% complete
  • 4-storey building: Estimated cost Rs 380 million — 60% complete
  • Total new capacity: 759 beds
  • Combined investment: Rs 625 million

Accelerated Timeline

In November 2025, Minister Kulman Ghising inspected the construction site and directed officials to deploy additional manpower, operate work in three shifts, and pay special attention to structural quality. The inspection came in response to concerns about construction delays, as the hospital expansion is critical to addressing the growing patient load in eastern Nepal.

Impact

As the primary public hospital for Koshi Province, the expanded facility will serve millions of residents across the province. The hospital has also been identified for development as a teaching hospital, which would create a medical education hub in Biratnagar and reduce the need for patients and medical students to travel to Kathmandu.

In December 2025, the hospital hosted a provincial-level meeting on oxygen preparedness, bringing together senior officials, hospital leaders, and partners — signaling its growing role as a healthcare coordination center for the region.
