Shiv Shrestha

Legendary Nepali Film Actor — The 'Action King'

1953 – present

From Biratnagar to the Silver Screen

Born on June 20, 1953, and raised in Biratnagar, Shiv Shrestha’s childhood in eastern Nepal was active — marked by sports like volleyball, football, and wrestling, as well as frequent cinema visits that fueled his passion for acting. He began as a theatre artist, performing in Nepali plays including Ramesh Budhathoki’s Dui Las Ek Chihan. In 1982, he made his film debut with the blockbuster Jeevan Rekha, which launched him into stardom.

The Action King of Nepali Cinema

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Shiv Shrestha dominated Nepali cinema with commercially successful films including Badalindo Akash (1984), Kanchi (1984), Bishwas (1986), Chino (1989), Manakamana (1991), Milan (1993), Dharma Sankat (1998), and Thuldai (1999). His action-packed performances earned him the title “Action King.” His appeal transcended borders — he acted in over a dozen Urdu/Pakistani films, and worked in the film industries of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Japan.

Comeback and Continuing Legacy

After stepping back from the spotlight, Shiv Shrestha made his comeback to Nepali cinema in 2016 with the film Bagmati, appearing alongside fellow icon Rajesh Hamal. In 2018, he announced Euta Esto Prem Kahani, a film he would write and produce, serving as the debut vehicle for his son Shakti — passing the torch to a new generation. His decades-long career and Biratnagar origins make him one of the most significant cultural figures to emerge from eastern Nepal.
