Biratnagar Origins and Rise to Stardom
Born on August 16, 1970, in Biratnagar to politician Prakash Koirala and Sushma Koirala, Manisha hails from one of Nepal’s most prominent families — her granduncle B.P. Koirala and other relatives served as Prime Ministers of Nepal. She made her acting debut with the Nepali film Pheri Bhetaula (1989) before breaking into Indian cinema with Saudagar (1991).
She quickly rose to become one of Bollywood’s top actresses, delivering memorable performances in Bombay (1995), Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997), Kachche Dhaage (1999), and Company (2002). Her work in Tamil cinema, including Indian (1996) and Mudhalvan (1999), also earned her widespread recognition. She is the recipient of three Filmfare Awards.
Cancer Battle and Reinvention
In 2012, Manisha was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer and sought treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy, and by 2013 was declared cancer-free. The experience profoundly transformed her and inspired her memoir Healed: How Cancer Gave Me a New Life (2018). Her recovery story has made her an inspiration to cancer patients worldwide.
Humanitarian Work and Legacy
Manisha was appointed UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador for India in 1999 and for Nepal in 2015, advocating for reproductive health and women’s rights. She was actively involved in relief efforts following the devastating April 2015 Nepal earthquake. As one of the most internationally recognized figures from Biratnagar, she has brought global attention to Nepali talent and culture.
